In theory, LNG cars are safer than gasoline and diesel cars. However, in the light of several LNG accidents that have occurred, the result is just the opposite. The degree of damage to the car body can even be described as appalling. The reason is not the safety of the gas vehicle itself, but the location of the gas cylinders occupy the driver's living space.
At present, the increase of cruising range of LNG vehicles must be achieved by increasing the number of cylinders, and due to the smaller wheelbase of tractors, the placement of cylinders becomes a significant problem. Therefore, the common method of placing is to place the cylinder on the cab.
This "back-style" approach is indeed easier to arrange from the perspective of vehicle design, but at present, road accidents in China are still mostly rear-end, and LNG vehicles using "back-end" gas cylinders are rear-ended, due to the cab. There is no buffer space at the rear, so that the gas can be squeezed to cause gas leakage. At that time, natural gas can become an oxidizer, and the release rate is much faster than that of oil. The consequences will be disastrous.
Therefore, experts suggest that in the future, LNG vehicles will best emulate diesel vehicles and place cylinders in the tank. The use of "side-mounted" will leave some space behind the cab. Even if an accident occurs, there will be room for protection and buffer for the occupants.
