Dow Chemical and Akrilik Kimya Sanayii signed a definitive agreement on December 20 to establish a joint venture to produce carbon fiber and derivatives. Dow Chemical and Aksa will each hold 50% of the joint venture company. In the next five years, the project's total investment is expected to reach 1 billion U.S. dollars and create 1,000 jobs. The joint venture will expand the existing carbon fiber production capacity of the Aksa plant in Yalova, Turkey, and will build a large-scale high-grade carbon fiber product manufacturing and supply base. Aksa is the world's largest producer of acrylic fiber, with a production capacity of 308,000 tons/year, accounting for 14.2% of the global market share.
